In an emergency, minutes can seem like hours. If you call 911, we will be able to come to your aid more quickly if you help show us the way. Please give the dispatchers as much information as possible so that we can locate you and determine the type of assistance you need. Once the dispatcher has the information and instructs you to hang up, you or someone else should go outside and wait for the responding emergency vehicles and assist them in locating the problem. Another way you can help is by having your street number posted in a highly visible location. Numbers should be at least three inches high and either reflective or in a contrasting color. Remember, if you need assistance, help show us the way.

Over the past year, there have been several incidents in which candles have caused fires resulting in extensive damage. Recently, various types of candles have been recalled by manufacturers after several reports have deemed them a fire hazard. Misuse and carelessness have also contributed to fires by burning candles.

The Enfield Fire Chiefs Association reminds you to think about what you are doing when burning candles and to be safe in doing it. Here are some helpful tips and facts to consider:

• Make sure the flame is not too high and that there is nothing above it that can easily ignite (such as curtains or drapes).
• Be careful where you place the candle in the room. Hot wax can ignite furniture and your rug if it gets exposed.
• Put your candle in a proper container and make sure it can hold the melted wax. It’s best to use a holder specifically made and intended for candles. Miscellaneous containers/dishes made of glass, plastic or other materials pose a threat. Several reports have shown glass containers breaking from and exposing hot wax.
• Be aware of the toxic gas the flame puts off. Make sure you don’t use too many candles at once and have a place for the flames to vent.
• NEVER LEAVE A BURNING CANDLE UNATTENDED.
